Working Through Depression

How do you successfully promote a book when you're struggling just to get out of bed in the morning?

I've thought a lot about whether or not to write this post. What do I want to gain from this? Attention? Sympathy? Sales?
None of the above. It comes down to this, I have a book out I've worked hard on and I would only be hurting myself by ignoring that fact.

For weeks now I've been struggling with my depression. It's nothing new to me but it is something that still manages to sneak up on me and catch me unawares. I've seen a lot from other authors these past weeks about bullying and their struggle to deal with it. In my case I'm my own worst enemy. It's my own insecurities and paranoia which have been pulling me further and further into that darkness which often threatens to overwhelm me.

Trust me when I say this isn't an attention seeking exercise. I'm not going to announce my intention to slip off this mortal coil and wait for people to talk me around. On the occasions in the past where I did attempt to put myself out of my misery, I did so without discussing it with anyone. Besides, I have a husband and family I would never abandon. This lapse is simply lasting longer than usual, harder to drag myself out of. And I'm depressing myself just by writing this paragraph, so...apologies.

Writing is probably the worst profession to be in when you're prone to such dark thoughts. It's lonely, and you leave yourself open to rejection from publishers, readers and reviewers. And yet, it's the one thing that's kept me going this time. No matter how many doubt crows circle my head with cries of 'This is shit', I've finished the manuscript I've been working on. There's a lot of work to do but at least I have a manuscript to work with whenever I pull myself together. That's what I'm supposed to do, right? Stop whinging and just get on with it. If only it was that simple.

If any of you are still reading, you might wonder what has driven me to such despair? The one thing which always darkens my mood - my father. He doesn't even have to be near me to cause the misery. I've been slipping since I heard he was in intensive care. We're estranged, by events which he caused and has shown no remorse for, and I felt no compulsion to visit him in hospital. Yet, I'm plagued by guilt. I should feel something, surely?

Add to that the fifth Mother's Day without my mum, a reminder of my grief, and very soon things begin to pile up. I'm in that really irritating stage of not talking to anyone, pushing everyone away, and lapsing into the 'no-one cares' lament. It's a wonder my husband puts up with me really. He's just riding the storm out with me and waiting until it passes.

Deep down I know I'm lucky. I have a wonderful husband and two great boys, and I have the privilege of being able to write full time. Eventually I will get through this and I apologise to everyone I may have stiffed over blog posts and Candy Crush requests while I work through this.

I'm taking a break in the sun for a few days in the hope it will somehow help. I won't be here on release day for Titanic's Ondine on Friday, so I'm posting this early. If anyone feels inclined to do so, a share would go a long way to helping me since I'm not feeling sociable, virtually or otherwise.

Blurb:
Can a water nymph save her true love from the Titanic or are they both doomed forever?
Water nymph Madeleine has spent a lifetime searching for the human she can marry to become mortal. Finally, she finds true love with Joe Marlowe, but the romance is put on hold when he signs up as crew for the Titanic.
Joe never expects to see Maddy on board the ship but she's a welcome sight during the voyage. He knows she's keeping a secret from him but it doesn't diminish his love for her. They have the rest of their lives to discover each other. After an unforgettable night together in the Titanic's indoor pool he knows he's found the woman he wants to marry.
As the liner sails towards its fate, can Madeleine save Joe, and find her happy ever after?

Excerpt:
“I find the setting perfect for a romantic affair. Glamorous liners bound for faraway places, carrying young men with fire in their bellies. Why it’s enough to get any young lady’s pulse racing.” She ran a fingertip down his white shirt to distract him from his questioning. That slight contact with the man she loved was enough to start a fiery lust consuming her from the inside out.
“Madeleine—” The ragged manner in which Joe addressed her didn’t sound like a scolding, or an attempt to stop her.
“Shh!” A finger on his lips and a coy smile was all it took for him to discard his gentlemanly manners and let his passion take hold.
He was deceptively masterful in the seduction stakes. His firm lips staked their claim with a series of breath-taking kisses that almost made her mourn the time they had wasted thus far in their chaste courtship.
Crushed against the rough fabric of his jacket—Madeleine’s nipples hardened beneath the thin silk of her green dress—sensitized and begging to be noticed. Joe didn’t disappoint. He traced his thumb over one prominent peak. The simple over-the-clothing contact sent her body into raptures and generated an ache in her loins that she wanted him to remedy.
Her head told her to go carefully. He thought of her as a lady—pure and innocent—and not one to give herself away before her wedding night. But that other, sinful part of her wanted him regardless of the consequences. And that craving won out. She pressed herself closer to him until she was left with no doubt he felt the same. The ridged evidence in his trousers nestled into the skirts of her dress and she couldn’t stop herself from running her hand along the impressive length of him.
She half expected him to back away in shock or disgust. So when he took it one step further by cupping her breast firmly in his hand, her legs all but buckled beneath her. He scooped her breast from her dress, exposing it to the cool April air. Her pussy swelled with need. With each massage he gave her flesh, she came one step closer to nirvana, moaning as the moisture from her arousal soaked her skin and clothes.
Joe backed her away from the main walkway and pinned her against the wall of a ramshackle wooden building, creating a scenario Madeleine wouldn’t have believed  possible. Of course, she imagined her reserved Joe to be a considerate lover, but she hadn’t expected their explosive chemistry to lead them to the point of making love outdoors.
Joe lifted her skirts, skimming his hand along the tops of her stockings, and then grabbed her ass to pull her onto his still imprisoned cock. Driven by mounting impatience, Madeleine reached to undo the buttons of his trousers and take the next step in their relationship.
It turned out to be a step too far. Moments later, the strong arms around her pushed where they once pulled her to him. Joe wrenched his mouth away.
“I’m sorry. Please forgive me,” he pleaded, voice unsteady.
“You have nothing to apologize for,” she told him.
Except, perhaps, being too chivalrous. One brief encounter with the saviour of her long-lost virtue wasn’t nearly enough, but she dared not raise his suspicions with further unladylike behaviour.
“You deserve more than a rushed fumble by the docks, Maddy. When the time comes, I want it to be something special, a memory to be cherished forever. Though I don’t know how I’ll get through these next weeks without even kissing you again.”
Joe rested his forehead against hers. His was beaded with sweat from the effort of his restraint.
Not on my account, she wanted to scream, but the moment had passed. She adjusted her clothes.
He behaved as though the last ten minutes had not happened and picked up the conversation regarding his departure. But all she wanted to do was move farther into his embrace, make this night last forever.
“Will you wave me off when I leave?”
As much as he deserved a teary farewell, she shook her head. “It’s not my place.”
She wouldn’t encroach on the intimate family moment which accompanied his every journey. That was their time. This was hers.
“Let’s say our goodbyes now.” Madeleine stood on tiptoe to offer up her lips.
This time, Joe’s kiss was a slow exploration mapping out the contours of her lips, as though he were memorizing her taste. That sensuous perusal finally eroded the jaded view she harboured for the male species. Joe didn’t demand, simply took what she willingly gave, and he returned it with love. He respected her, cherished her, and, for the first time in decades, Madeleine let herself trust.

A Siren Erotic Romance

STORY EXCERPT

The sound of a door slamming was closely followed by loud curses of a creative, if inaccurate, nature. Lifting his head up from the books he’d been semi-diligently going over, Daniel peeked out the window. What he saw was one of his hands, half-dressed, arguing with Constantine, his housekeeper.
Rolling his chair closer to the window, he cracked it open. He didn’t need to, the whole house had air conditioning. Nope, he was being a nosy old man and cracked it to eavesdrop. Not that he was old. He was only sixty and still going strong. He’d had a great life, an even better one with his beloved wife Charlotte, God rest her soul. She’d given him thirty-five years of marriage, love, and the best sex of his life. She’d also given him every single one of his gray hairs, two sons and a daughter.
Connor worked the farm and, one day, would take over for him. Brendan was a lawyer in Great Falls and handled all the legal matters for the farm, not that there were a lot, but it was a business. And his baby, Patricia, was in New York working for an interior designer and one day, God willing, would go out on her own. In the meantime she was living life, enjoying her career and called him every weekend to chat a mile a minute. Just like her mama used to do whenever she was excited, or pissed off. Chuckling, he shook his head. That girl could talk the ear off of anyone and try the patience of even the Pope himself.
“I’ve told you a dozen times Constantine, and I’m sorry I have to apparently declare it to the whole damned world, but I’m not interested,” Blake, the half-dressed hand, said in a loud tone. Daniel’s attention was dragged back to the goings-on outside the window.
“That’s not what Trevor said,” the woman shrieked. “Do you think I would be there if you hadn’t apparently been pining for me?”
“Pining!” Daniel winced. He hadn’t known that Blake’s voice could go that high or that loud. “Woman, I have never nor will I ever pine for a woman. Especially you, Constantine Delgado. You are a busybody and way too much maintenance. And if I ever, ever catch you trying to jump me while I’m in my rack sleeping again, I will personally kick your ass out of Montana one step at a time.”
The woman shrieked at the top of her lungs, pure frustration there, Daniel thought. His next thought was he would be needing a new housekeeper. And he was spot-on with that assessment, especially given her next words. “Don’t fucking bother you degenerate! I quit!” she screamed. With that volume, Daniel was pretty sure all of Montana knew she’d just quit.
“Good!” Blake sneered right back at her. “I pity the next fool that dares to take you on. I only pray that he’s got a wife that puts you in your fucking place.”
Another shriek and Constantine was storming toward the house. Eyes going wide, Daniel shut the window and rolled his chair back into place just in time for the front door to smack the siding. Wincing, he turned his attention to the books as she went to her room. More banging, door slamming, and a lot of swearing.
One of the problems with having a single woman on the farm was that the men tended to forget about her sex when they were working and let loose with some creative language. Not that he normally minded. The only time he enforced it with the hands was when Patricia came home to visit. ’Course, most of the lads thought of her as a baby sister, so that helped keep the cursing to a minimum. Not that he was fool enough to believe his baby girl couldn’t out-swear them all. She could. He was just in denial and would remain so until the day he left his farm and went to meet up with his Charlotte in the hereafter.
His head came up as he realized that silence reigned in the house all of a sudden. Oops, thought it too soon. A door slammed and angry steps stomped toward his office. Pasting on a bland expression, he looked up. “Constantine, uh, are you going somewhere?” he asked. Okay, an Academy Award was not in his future, but she was too pissed off to notice.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Graymont, I can’t work here any longer. I quit,” she said, slamming her suitcase to the floor.
“I’m sorry to hear that, Constantine. May I ask why?” He tipped his head and hoped he looked confused and slightly curious.
“It’s got nothing to do with you, sir. It’s…” she waved a hand viciously if vaguely about. “It’s them! Those no-good, vile men!” she hissed.
Fighting a chuckle, he nodded slowly. “Well, I’m sad to see you go, Constantine. But you have to do whatever is right for you, dear.” He grabbed his checkbook and wrote her out a check for her last pay plus a little extra. Passing it to her, he sighed, “If you need references, you have them call me. You did great work while you were here and I’m going to make sure they know that.”
She folded the check, stuffed it into her purse and hefted her suitcase. “Thank you, Mr. Graymont. I am sorry to leave you in the lurch like this.”
“Don’t even worry about it. We’ll make do.” He waved her off. “Drive safe now and if you need anything, let me know.”
A stiff nod was her only answer as she spun away. The door slammed behind her and he turned to watch her march to her car. The finger she threw toward the bunkhouse was telling—immature, but very telling. So were the spinning tires and gravel kicked up behind her as she tore up the drive toward the main road.
“Wow, that girl is mad,” he muttered, reaching for the phone. Hitting a number on speed dial, he grinned when his buddy at the Mission Post picked up. “Morty, how’s it going? Good, good. Nah, usual shit and lots of it, given what I’ve got out in the north forty. Listen, I need you to run my ad for a housekeeper. Yup, she thought she’d get into one of the lads’ pants and he told her otherwise. I know, damn women are just too pushy. A little subtlety goes a hell of a lot further. Yup, sounds good. I’ll drop the check off tomorrow when I’m in getting supplies. What? Yeah,” he chuckled. “We can grab a beer. Let’s say around four if that works for you. Sounds good, see you then Mort.”

This week's #SexySnippets is taken from my new release, Titanic's Ondine. Enjoy!

Can a water nymph save her true love from the Titanic or are they both doomed forever?

'A sudden jolt of the ship stole her happily-ever-after from her grasp.
The lurch of the vessel sloshed the contents of the pool, including the naked bathers, forcefully against its walls.
“What the hell was that?” Joe spluttered as the unexpected waves swamped them.
Through it all, Madeleine’s personal lifesaver kept an arm round her. Even though she was never in danger of succumbing underwater, somehow Joe’s tight grip gave her solace. His embrace reaffirmed his commitment to her and told her without words that he was as concerned with her safety as with his own.
The ship came to a jerky halt, and a cold chill of foreboding pricked Madeleine’s skin.'

She had first laid eyes on him on these docks and visited here every day since, following his progress. She grimaced. How could she tell him she daren’t venture too far from the water’s edge because of who she was? What she was?

#SexySnippets - The Wolf on the Run

I'm feeling nostalgic for my wolfies today. My #SexySnippet is from The Wolf on the Run, book two in my series, The Wild Irish Wolves.

'Rory led her over the hills, their claws making short work of carving up the cold, hard terrain. Naomi never lost ground. Even when he made a turn towards the woods on the boundary, she kept pace.
The chase awakened something deep inside him—that animal freedom with no responsibilities except the survival of himself and his pack. The spiky silhouettes of barren trees lined his path, like broad strokes of a black marker pen scratched against the silver sky.
He dodged in and out, never slowing, with Naomi always in pursuit. Occasionally, a pair of woodland eyes blinked at him from the darkness—a rabbit, a fox, observing their bizarre courtship.

Rory had no doubt the exhilaration of their illicit run would end in wild sex between him and Naomi. It was like a very enthusiastic bout of foreplay without actual touching.'

Blurb:

Alpha Rory is determined to protect his pack, including feisty Naomi. How can
he get close when she's intent on facing her demons alone?
As a police officer and Alpha of the Olcan Hills' pack, being a protector is in Rory
Blake's DNA.
When Naomi Duffy turned up heavily pregnant and alone, Rory's natural instinct was
to look after her. However, her fierce need for independence over the years has
ensured they've never been anything more than friends.
Naomi has spent too long trying to keep her daughter safe to jeopardise everything for
a fling. However, when her past threatens to catch up with her, Rory is the only person
she trusts with her life.
Thrown together, the couple finally succumb to their passion and it's all too easy to
forget the danger lurking in the hills.
Do Rory and Naomi have a future together, or will secrets from the past tear them
 apart?

New Release! - L M Somerton - Rasputin's Kiss

I'm excited to have the wonderful L M Somerton today, with a teaser from Rasputin's Kiss :)

Hi Jorja,

Thanks so much for having me on your blog to talk about my latest release, Rasputin’s Kiss. Even though I’ve published several other books, this was actually the first story I ever wrote, so it’s very close to my heart.

“I herewith list a few of the devices which no self-respecting detective story writer will now avail himself of. They have been employed too often, and are familiar to all true lovers of literary crime. To use them is a confession of the author's ineptitude and lack of originality. (a) Determining the identity of the culprit by comparing the butt of a cigarette left at the scene of the crime with the brand smoked by a suspect. (b) The bogus spiritualistic seance to frighten the culprit into giving himself away. (c) Forged fingerprints. (d) The dummy-figure alibi. (e) The dog that does not bark and thereby reveals the fact that the intruder is familiar. (f)The final pinning of the crime on a twin, or a relative who looks exactly like the suspected, but innocent, person. (g) The hypodermic syringe and the knockout drops. (h) The commission of the murder in a locked room after the police have actually broken in. (i) The word association test for guilt. (j) The cipher, or code letter, which is eventually unraveled by the sleuth.”

This list was written in 1928 and I’m happy to say that Rasputin’s Kiss does not fall into any of these traps J. Of course it’s primarily a gay bdsm romance and a detective story second, but falling in to the cliché mire holds true of both genres. Weaving the two together was a challenge and I really hope that readers enjoy the result. Here’s an intro and a little snippet to tempt you…

Investigating Love - Series Blurb

Being thrown together in extreme circumstances is not the best foundation for a relationship. Alex and Conor must juggle the demands of their jobs as police detectives with their personal lives. With Alex as demanding in the bedroom as he is at work, will Conor be able to accept that submission is not weakness.
Finding out will be the most important investigation of their lives.

Rasputin’s Kiss - Book Blurb:

Rasputin’s kiss is lethal. He’s a ghost – killing and disappearing into the night. With few leads and four bodies on his conscience, Detective Inspector Alex Courtney and his team are running on empty and it’s only a matter of time before Rasputin strikes again.
When Alex recruits a young detective to play the part of his boyfriend and provide a tempting target for a killer, he knows he is taking a huge risk. He doesn’t expect Conor Trethuan to be a perfect potential submissive. When their mutual attraction becomes more, Alex has to face the conflict between his possessive instincts and the need to push his young lover into danger.
Investigating their feelings has to come second to investigating the case. There’s no time to decide if what they feel for each other is real. With Rasputin closing in, they may not live to find out.

Excerpt:

They walked in companionable silence to a small Italian restaurant just around the corner from the station and sat at a table next to the window. The whole place was a cliché, with red and white checked tablecloths, candles in old Chianti bottles coated with solidified drips of wax and laminated menus that had seen better days. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, though, and the whole place smelt of herbs and spices.
A short, rotund man bustled over and greeted Alex like a long-lost member of his family. After effusive introductions that seemed to include most of the staff and half the customers in the restaurant, fresh bread with aromatic olive oil was left to tide them over while their food was prepared. Alex ordered for both of them, watching Conor as he did. The overt act of dominance made Conor smile wryly. He wondered if Alex had expected him to be annoyed. A brief look of satisfaction crossed Alex’s face and that gave Conor his answer. Conor dipped a piece of warm bread in oil and held it to his mouth, allowing the slick liquid to spread across his lips. He took a bite then slowly ran his tongue over his lower lip, chasing a stray drop of oil. Alex’s eyes widened and a hint of colour bloomed on his cheeks. Conor smiled innocently.

I think I have a wolf in sheep’s clothing here, Alex thought to himself. Well, an enthusiastic pup anyway. He could imagine smearing that oil in all kinds of interesting places. It was a delight to watch Conor eat. He twirled his linguine expertly, complimented the chef politely and smiled shyly at the waitress who couldn’t take her eyes off him. He didn’t encourage her any more, though, and Alex was secretly pleased about that. He bristled at the sight of other people casting flirtatious looks at Conor. Unfortunately that seemed to happen when anyone noticed him. Conor drew admiring glances from every woman in the place, and jealous ones from the men they were with. Alex wanted to growl at them, make it clear that Conor was not available, and maybe put a paper bag over Conor’s head so that everyone would stop lusting after him. Still Conor seemed comfortable in his company and was attentive. He wasn’t distracted by any of the attention—in fact he seemed completely oblivious to it.
An hour, and a pleasantly full stomach, later Alex decided it was time to let his latest recruit know what he was really in for. Alex wasn’t looking forward to confessing, but it had to be done. Both he and Conor had stuck to mineral water with their meals so he couldn’t take advantage of senses dulled by alcohol, which might have made things easier. Now they sat with tiny cups of rich, dark espresso in front of them and there were no more excuses or distractions. Alex took a deep breath and tried to focus on what he needed to say. Okay maybe there was still a distraction—a beautiful, dark-haired one sitting just across the table. Author bio:

L M Somerton lives in a small village in the English countryside, surrounded by rolling hills, cows and sheep. She started writing to fill time between jobs and is now firmly and unashamedly addicted.

She loves the English weather, especially the rain, and adores a thunderstorm. She loves good food, warm company and a crackling fire. She’s fascinated by the psychology of relationships, especially between men, and her stories contain some subtle (and not so subtle) leanings towards BDSM.
